How do we overcome the OBSTACLES that limit us from experiencing a better human EXISTENCE?
It is painfully clear the current systems and status quo do not incentivize positive behaviours in us. When the majority of us are limited to renting homes or rooms at a higher cost then standard mortgages. Renting from owners who often have more then their needs yet still manage to live money stressed lives. It is no wonder renters feel irritated and have little respect or pride in the properties they are paying for, yet will never actually own.
Delema
On top of this, if a renter invests time and energy to improve the property they live on, they risk being evicted under an unjust manner. Just so the owner can rent the property at a higher rate. This in turn leads renters to adopted a position to live in squaller, have no drive to improver their living environment and even intentionally damage properties. Playing a balancing act, hoping the owner will not consider looking for new renters, but also not be irritated enough to evict them on terms of property damages.

The tenancy act was created to protect renters from landlords, however this has backfired in many ways. The cost of rentals has been steadily rising, while wages have not increased. One cause to the increase in cost is due to many owners opting out of renting their homes because the tenancy act protects renters regardless of their impact on the properties. Many landlords must invest 10s of 1000s of dollars to repair damages to their properties after renters move out. And, if a renter is damaging a property and refuses to leave or take accountability, the tenancy act protects them.

Byproducts
So the tenancy act increases the risk for property owners. Signing a tenancy agreement, is like signing your rights away as an owner… Many owners that are not in desperate need of money would rather leave their homes empty because of this. And with more homes empty, less homes are available on the rental market. Driving up the price.

the Mission
What ABCs is working to create is occupancy agreements that offer a higher level of accountability and security for both the occupant and the owners. We are working to create agreements that empower occupants to improve their homes and respect them. Agreements that limit the power an occupant has to create issues for landlords. However, still offer occupants a high level of long term security and protection from owners.
IN Conclution
Simply put, ABCs is restructuring the rules that govern the relationships between owners and renters, in ways that encourage positive behaviour and stronger relations. We right the rules to the systems at play. If things are not working, we can simply rewrite them.
